Wow ! 10 million Angry Birds Space downloads in less than 3 days

I have no doubt Angry Birds is a popular game, but 10 million downloads in less than 3 days. Let's say it's a full 3 days. It is 3.33 millions downloads per day, 138,888 downloads per hour, 2,315 downloads per min, and 38 downloads per second. That's a bit crazy.

Sweden moving towards cashless economy

Quite interesting news. After getting my credit card, I seldom use cash. However, imagine there's cashless economy in your country. I don't know how if I can accept that, but Sweden is heading there.

Vicar Johan Tyrberg in the Carl Gustaf Church in Karlshamn, southern Sweden, on Sept 7, 2011, stands next to a credit card machine enabling worshippers to donate money to the church collection without carrying money in their pockets. (AP Photo/Camilla Lindskog)
(AP) STOCKHOLM - Sweden was the first European country to introduce bank notes in 1661. Now it's come farther than most on the path toward getting rid of them.
"I can't see why we should be printing bank notes at all anymore," says Bjoern Ulvaeus, former member of 1970's pop group ABBA, and a vocal proponent for a world without cash.
The contours of such a society are starting to take shape in this high-tech nation, frustrating those who prefer coins and bills over digital money.
In most Swedish cities, public buses don't accept cash; tickets are prepaid or purchased with a cell phone text message. A small but growing number of businesses only take cards, and some bank offices — which make money on electronic transactions — have stopped handling cash altogether.
"There are towns where it isn't at all possible anymore to enter a bank and use cash," complains Curt Persson, chairman of Sweden's National Pensioners' Organization.
He says that's a problem for elderly people in rural areas who don't have credit cards or don't know how to use them to withdraw cash.
The decline of cash is noticeable even in houses of worship, like the Carl Gustaf Church in Karlshamn, southern Sweden, where Vicar Johan Tyrberg recently installed a card reader to make it easier for worshippers to make offerings.
"People came up to me several times and said they didn't have cash but would still like to donate money," Tyrberg says.
Bills and coins represent only 3 percent of Sweden's economy, compared to an average of 9 percent in the eurozone and 7 percent in the U.S., according to the Bank for International Settlements, an umbrella organization for the world's central banks.
Three percent is still too much if you ask Ulvaeus. A cashless society may seem like an odd cause for someone who made a fortune on "Money, Money, Money" and other ABBA hits, but for Ulvaeus it's a matter of security.
After his son was robbed for the third time he started advocating a faster transition to a fully digital economy, if only to make life harder for thieves.
"If there were no cash, what would they do?" says Ulvaeus, 66.
The Swedish Bankers' Association says the shrinkage of the cash economy is already making an impact in crime statistics.
The number of bank robberies in Sweden plunged from 110 in 2008 to 16 in 2011 — the lowest level since it started keeping records 30 years ago. It says robberies of security transports are also down.
"Less cash in circulation makes things safer, both for the staff that handle cash, but also of course for the public," says Par Karlsson, a security expert at the organization.
The prevalence of electronic transactions — and the digital trail they generate — also helps explain why Sweden has less of a problem with graft than countries with a stronger cash culture, such as Italy or Greece, says economics professor Friedrich Schneider of the Johannes Kepler University in Austria.
"If people use more cards, they are less involved in shadow economy activities," says Schneider, an expert on underground economies.
In Italy — where cash has been a common means of avoiding value-added tax and hiding profits from the taxman — Prime Minister Mario Monti in December put forward measures to limit cash transactions to payments under euro1,000 ($1,300), down from euro2,500 before.
The flip side is the risk of cybercrimes. According to the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention the number of computerized fraud cases, including skimming, surged to nearly 20,000 in 2011 from 3,304 in 2000.
Oscar Swartz, the founder of Sweden's first Internet provider, Banhof, says a digital economy also raises privacy issues because of the electronic trail of transactions. He supports the idea of phasing out cash, but says other anonymous payment methods need to be introduced instead.
"One should be able to send money and donate money to different organizations without being traced every time," he says.
It's no surprise that Sweden and other Nordic countries are at the forefront of this development, given their emphasis on technology and innovation.
For the second year in a row, Sweden ranked first in the Global Information Technology Report released at the World Economic Forum in January. The Economist Intelligence Unit also put Sweden top of its latest digital economy rankings, in 2010. Both rankings measure how far countries have come in integrating information and communication technologies in their economies.
Internet startups in Sweden and elsewhere are now hard at work developing payment and banking services for smartphones.
Swedish company iZettel has developed a device for small traders, similar to Square in the U.S., that plugs into the back of an iPhone to make it work like a credit card terminal. Sweden's biggest banks are expected to launch a joint service later this year that allows customers to transfer money between each other's accounts in real-time with their cell phones.
Most experts don't expect cash to disappear anytime soon, but that its proportion of the economy will continue to decline as such payment options become available. Before retiring as deputy governor of Sweden's central bank, Lars Nyberg said last year that cash will survive "like the crocodile, even though it may be forced to see its habitat gradually cut back."
Andrea Wramfelt, whose bowling alley in the southern city of Landskrona stopped accepting cash in 2010, makes a bolder prediction: She believes coins and notes will cease to exist in Sweden within 20 years.
"Personally I think this is what people should expect in the future," she says.
But there are pockets of resistance. Hanna Celik, whose family owns a newspaper kiosk in a Stockholm shopping mall, says the digital economy is all about banks seeking bigger earnings.
Celik says he gets charged about 5 Swedish kronor ($0.80) for every credit card transaction, and a law passed by the Swedish Parliament prevents him from passing on that charge to consumers.
"That stinks," he says. "For them (the banks), this is a very good way to earn a lot of money, that's what it's all about. They make huge profits."

A game you should not miss Angry Birds Space

One of the most popular mobile game - Angry Birds. I was so addicted when I first played this game in 2010. It was on iPad platform. I played until 3 am in the morning. Honestly, it's a good game and very addictive, and very good time killer. I did enjoy playing the Angry Birds Season. The game got different theme like Christmas, Chinese New Year, Halloween, Valentines Day and etc. Those are good idea to play in Angry Birds version. I didn't get a chance to play Angry Birds Rio. Maybe I will try it later. Angry Birds Space just came out today, and I did try on it. I fall in love with this new Angry Birds game. If you like Angry Birds ,Angry Birds Season or Angry Birds Rio, you should not miss Angry Birds Space.

Climbing a 25 ft Building VS Climbing a 1768 ft Transmission Tower

access ladder
Last year, I got a chance to climb a 25 ft building by using the outside standard access ladder (see picture).  I should point out that I fear of height, and I have never climbed this kind of ladder before. I did it because it was a great chance to overcome my comfort zone and experience people who work with the heights. I really admired people that have the courage to work at height.

This experience brought me back to this video. It's very scary when I first watched it. I didn't understand how people can do this. First, they have to no fear of extreme heights. Second, they have to no fear of death. At the last part of video, they were free climbing which means no fall protection at all. What if the case that there's strong wind when they climb. What if the case that there's lighting when they climb. What if the case that some birds try to attack them. They have no where to go. This video only shows the climbing up part. What about the climbing down. Maybe they can wear a parachute, but after watching couple more times, I don't think parachute is a good idea. To begin with, each of the workers has to wear basic personal protection equipment and hang a tool bag which weight 30 lbs. If they bring the parachute with them, it is definitely an extra burden for them to complete the job safely.   Climbing up is hard. I think climbing down is even harder.

Usually, if you are in high risk job, you will get high pay. I was surprised that transmission/communication tower climber only earn an average $75,000 annual salary, but it may be because they only work three or four days a week. According to ISP planet, climbers often charge $1,500 or more a day plus additional insurance fees or charging $295 per hour. In United State, the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries from 2006 didn't even list cell phone tower workers as a separate category. Cell phone tower work is such a small sub-industry, which means the number of deaths somewhat minimal. In 2006, the death ratio of cell phone workers was 183.6 deaths for every 100,000 workers.

If you paid me $75,000 to climb 1768 feet tower for once, thanks, I am not going to do it.

Hiking in snowfall winter, you need a pair of snowshoes

Sundance Canyon - Waterfall with full of snow
Picture taken by Keiyan Ng
Another first time this year. Yesterday I went hiking with friends in Banff. More importantly, I got a chance to try on the snowshoeing. It was fun because I have never hiked on the snow. The trail we picked call Sundance Canyon. According to Parks Canada, this trail is about 4.3km to end of pavement, plus 1.2km loop through canyon, 145m elevation gain; 3 hour round trip. Our starting point was different with Parks Canada. I had 5.5 km (round trip 11km) according to my tracks record, and it took us 4 hrs and 15 min to finish the trail. We stopped few times to take pictures and have lunch. There's a waterfall at the end of the Sundance Canyon, and my friend told me it's very beautiful. When I arrived there I only saw snow, but it's still very nice. If I get a chance, I would love to go in Summer time. Hiking over snow was totally different experience. Overall, the experience was great, and I really enjoyed it. I found that I used much more energy compare to regular hiking because I had to lift up my foot higher. Another interesting thing I found, I almost fell off when I tried to walk backward. Snowshoes are not design for moving backward. If you want to, you need to move like a car, make a U-turn.

So What is snowshoe?
- Snowshoe is a footwear that allow you walk over the snow.
- Snowshoe works because they can distribute a person weight on a lager area.
- Some historians believe that snowshoes were invented from four thousand to six thousand years ago.
- North Americans Native developed the most advance and diverse snowshoes.
- Tradition snowshoes made by hardwood frame with latticework of rawhide lacing.
- Modern snowshoes made by lightweight metal frame with nylon/neoprene deck and synthetic fabric.
- In the past, snowshoes were very important tools for traders, trappers and whoever lived around the areas of deep and frequent snowfall.
- Now snowshoes are more for people who want to hike around during the winter time.
- During wintertime, some schools offer snowshoe program in their physical education classes to help combat obesity.

Radioactive Seawater Impact Map by ASR ltd.

My friend post the picture of radioactive Seawater Impact regarding to Japan Earthquake back from 2011. I found the whole article regarding to the picture from ASR ltd. It looks like the radioactive seawater heading to Hawii very soon. Then to west side of Canada and US. Some said human is smart, but when you look at the map, I don't think so. What can we do? How do we stop it? This article mention that the contaminated radioactive substances will eventually climb up to food chain.

When we hurt our nature, the nature will response. Should we be more responsible to our nature.  We can start with 3R - Recycle Reuse Reduce

Article from ASR ltd - Fukushima Radioactive Seawater Plume dispersal simulation

We use a Lagrangian particles dispersal method to track where free floating material (fish larvae, algae, phytoplankton, zooplankton...) present in the sea water near the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station plant could have gone since the earthquake on March 11th. THIS IS NOT A REPRESENTATION OF THE RADIOACTIVE PLUME CONCENTRATION. Since we do not know exactly how much contaminated water and at what concentration was released into the ocean, it is impossible to estimate the extent and dilution of the plume. However, field monitoring by TEPCO showed concentration of radioactive Iodine and Cesium higher than the legal limit during the next two months following the event (with a peak at more than 100 Bq/cm3 early April 2011 for I-131 as shown by the following picture).

Source: TEPCO
Assuming that a part of the passive biomass could have been contaminated in the area, we are trying to track where the radionuclides are spreading as it will eventually climb up the food chain. The computer simulation presented here is obtained by continuously releasing particles at the site during the 2 months folllowing the earthquake and then by tracing the path of these particles. The dispersal model is ASR's Pol3DD. The model is forced by hydrodynamic data from theHYCOM/NCODA system which provides on a weekly basis, daily oceanic current in the world ocean. The resolution in this part of the Pacific Ocean is around 8km x 8km cells. We are treating only the sea surface currents. The dispersal model keeps a trace of their visits in the model cells. The results here are expressed in number of visit per surface area of material which has been in contact at least once with the highly concentrated radioactive water.

Breaking News: New York Knicks Head Coach D’ANTONI Resigned (NOT FIRE)

When I went to NBA.com to check the Knicks game, I was shocked that Mike D'Antoni decided to leave New York Knicks. I really like this man. He worked so hard to build Knicks team. Finally, this year he got some good players on the line up. Start players: Tyson Chandler, Camero Anthony, Amar'e Stoudemire, Landry Fields, Jeremy Lin and very good bench players like JR Smith, Baron Davis, Steve Novaks, Jared Jeffries, Iman Shumpert and etc. The team overall is good, and I think they should go to the play off. However, after Camero Anthony returned to the team from his injury, somehow the team didn't work out well. Jeremy Lin and Camero Anthony had less point, and Knicks lost the last six games before today games.
In my opinion, I really like those games without Camero Anthony, and I almost watched every game. The team played very well, Jeremy Lin and pick and roll worked out perfectly. After Camero Anthony returned, you can see that he didn't really fit in pick and roll play.

"D’Antoni, the source said, had been advocating that the Knicks attempt to trade Anthony to the New Jersey Nets for guard Deron Williams, a deal D’Antoni believed would be beneficial for both franchises. But Dolan categorically declined that request, and the “conflicting visions” between the owner and head coach about Anthony meant there was no way forward.
D’Antoni had hoped the Knicks’ inspired and winning play with Lin as the centerpiece — while Anthony and Stoudemire were injured — would convince Dolan the Knicks could win without Anthony. Bringing Williams from the Nets would also have eases the burden on Lin, D’Antoni believed, allowing Lin to settle into a three-guard rotation. "
I really agree with D'Antoni, and I believe Jeremy Lin can be the centerpiece. However, I am not the boss of Knicks. I understand why Knicks' boss want to keep Camero Anthony. Simply his name has better value in the business rather than Deron Williams.

Anyways, D'Antoni resigned (NOT FIRE) and Mike Woodson is the coach for Knicks now. He has a lot of experience trying to turn around a struggling program. He made Atlanta three straight playoff appearances in his final three years with the team and rang up the fourth-best season in the franchise’s Atlanta history with a 53-29 record in 2009-10 in his six years career with Atlanta. He also known as defensive specialist. It made sense why Knicks won Blazers for 121: 79 tonight game, and it's a very good start for the team.

At last, I found this post from Jeremy Lin facebook. No doubt, D'Antoni means a lot to Lin during Linsanity in Feb or Lin means a lot to D'Antoni.

The new iPad or Android Tablet ?

The new iPad is coming out very soon on Mar 16, but before you go to buy it. Maybe it's good to look around for another option. Unless you are the died hard friend of Apple, some other android tablet will be another option. I found the below table from PCmagazine. It shows the differences among the New iPads and some other Android tablet

Some tests show that the Apple A5X chip has 1 Ghz Processer and 1GB of RAM.

If the above existing Android tablet seems old to you, Samsung is expected to release the Galaxy Note 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 very soon probably in Q2 2012.

Galaxy Note 10.1 expected to have a 1.4Ghz dual-core processor, a 10.1-inch 1280×800 pixel TFT display, 1GB RAM and 16/32/64GB internal storage, a 3MP back camera and 2MP front camera, with optional 3G and running Android 4.0

Galaxy Tab 2, it has a dual-core 1 GHz Cortex A9 processor,a 10.1-inch 1280x800 pixel TFT, 1GB of RAM, 3.15-megapixel camera with LED flash, VGA front camera, 16/32GB internal storage, and running Android 4.0

I found this table on CNET. It seems like Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 has some features that the new iPad doesn't have.

Should you wait for a bit more before you buy the new iPad?

100 years old almost got a speed ticket in Victoria

I know Victoria is a perfect place for retirement, and many health seniors live in Victoria. If someone told me a 80 years old lady or man driving on the road, I think that is a little bit too heavy for them, but it still doable. I have never thought that 100 years old man still driving on the street, and he may pass by me or follow me when I drive on the street. My friend told me there was a 100 years old man almost got a speed ticket in Victoria/ Saanich few days ago. The most interesting part is the 100 years old man just got a renewal for another 5 years. At this moment, he still has flawless driving record. He must be a very good driver, of course with a very healthy body. I found the news from Saanich News and Victoria Times Colonist.

A centenarian driver still has a spotless driving record after being issued a warning ticket when he was caught speeding in a school zone Tuesday afternoon.
The 100-year-old man was clocked driving his Buick Century 50 km/h in the 5000-block of Cordova Bay Rd.
Saanich police Sgt. Dean Jantzen said the traffic safety unit officer “wasn’t about to wreck his perfect driving record,” and issued him a warning.
Despite school not being in session on Tuesday, due to the teachers’ strike, Jantzen said there are reasonable expectations that children will be at school, and school zone speed limits are still in effect.

Victoria Times Colonist
It took 100 years for one Saanich man to tarnish his perfect record.
The centenarian was stopped for speeding in a school zone Tuesday, a shock to a Saanich traffic office when she saw the 1911 birthdate on a driver's licence, which was good for another five years. The traffic officer pulled over the 100-year-old driver in a Buick Century when he was spotted going 50 kilometers an hour in a school zone, where the limit is 30 kilometers an hour. The man had a flawless driving record, so the traffic officer gave him a warning ticket.
"I was shocked, not only at the 100 years of age, but the brand new five-year renewal driver licence," said Const. Janice Carmena.

My First time of watching Lacrosse – Calgary Roughnecks vs Minnesota Swarm

Introducing Lacrosse players - Picture taken by Keiyan Ng
Saturday’s night, I went out with my friend to watch Box Lacrosse. This was an exciting experience for me. Before I went to game, I had no expectation. I didn’t even know the name of this sport and the rules of the game. The first time I kind of noticed this sport was long time ago while I got off the ferry to Vancouver, I saw few people taking lacrosse gears along their ride. Recently, I watched the Lacrosse advertisement on sport channel. It seems like a pretty exciting sport for me.

I found few interesting things in this game. Many kids were on the seated to watch  the game. Unlike Calgary Flames, Calgary Roughnecks has a group of cheerleaders, and they cheered their team at the beginning and between break time. There was a DJ playing musics during the game. All the audiences played the wave around the stadium. It was a dance competition during the game, and five kids won the competition. It’s more like enjoying party rather than watching a sport game. On site sport reporter was very mean to the away team. It had many scores in one game; this is what I like the most. After the game, they opened the field for people who wanted signature from the players, cheerleader and even the mascot. With only $20 for the ticket, and full of all different kinds of entertainment. I think this $20 was worth more than that.

If you like watching hockey, I highly recommended give it a try to Lacrosse. You may enjoy it.

Some background about Lacrosse that I found in Wikipedia:
- Lacrosse is a Native American sport game, and it may have developed as early as AD 1100. By the seventeenth century, Lacrosse had been documented
- In the traditional Native Canadian version, each team consisted of about 100 to 1000 men on a field that stretched from about 500 meters to 3 kilometers long
- These games lasted from sunup to sundown for two to three days and mainly played as part of ceremonial ritual to give thanks to the master
People were waiting for signature - Picture taken by Keiyan Ng
- The name of Lacrosse came from the French word la crosse means “the stick”
- In 1994, Canada declared lacrosse its national summer sport
- There are two types of lacrosse: field lacrosse and box lacrosse (The one I watched)
- The highest level of pro box lacrosse is in National Lacrosse League (NLL)
- For NLL, each game plays four fifteen-minute quarters. To make the style of the game quick, attacking team require to take a shot within 30 seconds. Within 10 seconds, players must advance the ball from their defensive side to the offensive side.
- The playing area of box lacrosse is 55m (180ft) to 61m (200ft) in length and 24m (80ft) to 27m (90ft) in width.
- The 9 feet (2.7 m) to 9 feet 3 inches (2.82 m) diameter area surrounding the net is called the "crease".
Box Lacrosse Field Overview - Diagram from Wikipedia

- The game rules and gears are very similar to hockey. Except, box lacrosse doesn’t have offside, it has shot clock, player cannot enter the "crease" while playing the ball and they can use the stick to hit the player who holding the ball (this was what I observed).
- Lacrosse stick is between 1m (40 in) and 1.2m (46 in) in length, and it made by wood, aluminum or other metal. However, in NLL game wooden stick is not allowed.
- The best pro lacrosse players make around $20,000 per season. The rookie players make around $4000 to $8000 per season. The average salary per season is around $13,000

Some more information about Lacrosse game
National Lacrosse League game rule: http://www.nll.com/page/show/389125-lax-101

Calgary Roughnecks got the score in this clip. You can hear the background was very loud due to the music.

Minnesota Swarm got the penalty shoot, but they missed it.

Different Way to File your T4

Luckily, every time when I file my tax I don’t need to do it by hand. Even though I am using tax software, it still takes me a day or two to finish the filing. I cannot imagine how long it will take do it by hand. Thanks for the technology. When I was a student, I filed my tax online using Ufile because they offered a free service for students.  After graduated, I started using tax software sharing license key with friends to save money. I have never asked the accountants or Tax Service Company, like HR & Block, to file my tax because I think my tax filing wasn't that complicated. Another reason is that I think they are too expensive.

Anyways, today I found Apple App call SnapTax. It's a very cool technology, and I have never thought about filing tax in this way. Maybe I am outdated, this SnapTax has been existed since 2010.

SnapTax from TurboTax

SnapTax can download on App Store. It's obvious, simply snap a photo of your T4, Answer a few simple question, and submit your tax file. The app is free, but submitting the tax file will charge you $9.99 I think it's good for people have iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, only need to file T4 and living in Canada.

Too bad I can't try this App because I am using Android phone.
